High Surf on the Eastside Causing Road Debris

Thursday, November 12, 2009 a large north, north-east swell rolled into the Hawaiian Islands.  That day, with excitement, I decided to venture out and see if there were any surfable spots near Kualoa Ranch or Crouching Lion.  To my surprise the waves were larger than I expected and breaking way out past the second reef.  Looking out into the ocean all one could see was large waves breaking and white-wash everywhere.

The surf forecast were calling North Shore and the Eastside 6-10 feet Hawaiian Scale with isolated bigger sets.  Bigger waves are not as typical for the Eastside as North Shore.  There was no one out surfing from Kualoa to Crouching Lion and I could see why with the big and stormy surge that looked like a washing machine.  There were even parts of Kamehameha Highway where the ocean water came up onto the road.  I also heard that the Kaneohe Marine Base beaches were closed due to the high and dangerous waves.  Winter is definitely here and looks like it’s going to be a productive winter surf season!
