Big surf is expected to hit the north shore of Oahu and the Hawaiian islands this weekend and into early next week. The big surf is coming just in time for the holding period of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay. The big wave contest that is paddle in (no tow-ins here) and paddle out.
I went in 2004, you can see the video I took with my sony point and shoot camera and binoculars of Bruce Irons’ winning wave, it was nuts. Being there was a great experience and I can’t wait to see if it goes again. I’ll definitely be there, and you’ll see all the pictures.
You can get updates sent via email and text if you go to the Eddie Aikau quicksilver website. We’ll keep you posted here as well.
What are the rules for the Eddie Aikau you ask? Well, it has to be 20 foot plus (Hawaiian Scale) waves, and clean conditions. If it’s that big, everywhere else on the North Shore will be closed out and you’ll be sitting at Waimea Bay watching amazing action.
