The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will happen this week, says contest director George Downing. Either December 7th, 8th, or 9th. Wave heights are expected to consistently exceed 30 feet during these three days and contest directors are gauging when the best wave and wind conditions will cooperate. 40 plus faces are what is required for the contest to go.
Check back here at Aloha Update in the morning, we’ll keep you posted as soon as it’s called.
The contest is already setup at Waimea as crews erected towers for judges and video crews to be able to catch all the action. The national weather service has already issued their high surf warnings preparing for what could be extremely devastating surf, as the rest of Oahu hopes for huge surf to bring a contest.
If you’re looking to head up there and catch some of the contest you’ll need to find parking, which is going to be trouble. My suggestion is to find a spot away from the bay and then bike or walk in, or take the bus, but it’ll probably be faster to just walk.
Bring a camera, bring a video camera, and bring a chair. The Quicksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau Big Wave Challenge is ready to go and you should be too.
Check back in the morning.
