Prince Kuhio Day is a truly unique Hawai’i’an Holiday honoring the wisdom and service of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. Born March 26th 1871 he was deprived of the opportunity to ascend to the Hawai’i’an Throne by the overthrow of the Monarchy.
He none-the-less dedicated his life to serving the people of Hawai’i, serving as a Territorial Delegate to the US Congress until his death on January 7th 1922. Prince Kuhio Day was proclaimed in 1949 in his honor and to honor him a variety of celebrations are held throughout the Hawai’i’an Islands.
One of the most excellent ways to honor Prince Kuhio is sponsored by National Tropical botanical Garden at the NTBG South-Shore Visitor Center meadow at 4425 Lawai Road across from Spouting Horn Park west of Poipu. An Ohana Day Celebration held on Saturday, March 20th 2010 from 10AM To 2PM, it features arts & crafts, sale of local products, classes & workshops, and cultural displays.
Also there will be a featured speaker, the delightful Mele Brewer who shares Wisdom of the Kupuna: Olelo No`eau (Hawaiian Proverbs). Alongside the NTBG demonstrates Oshibana the creation of pictures using dried flora & fauna.
Do not pass up this opportunity to run away to Kauai and learn valuable lessons from Hawai’i’an Culture. Further info: Mele Brewer Phone: (808) 742- 2433 more info.
