HIFF Going All Out as it Celebrates 30 Years This Month

HIFF-30-Web-Banner-300x250This month the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) will have it’s 30th birthday at the Dole Theaters in Honolulu. The film festival has gone from simple. Fun film festival, to very well known film festival. This year will be the 30th year that the film festival has entertained local audiences with amazing stories from around the world.

All of the usual festivities will be taking place, but this year’s celebration will also bring more surprises and adventures that audiences can look forward to.

The two most talked about happenings include the Sound x Vision section, which will include not only screenings, but a couple of panels and a live-music showcase downtown as well.

The Sound x Vision part of the festival will break down into three parts:

  1. A traditional film section.
  2. A panel discussion about getting original music into film and TV projects.
  3. A special “speed dating” setup where a select group of local bands and composers will able to pitch and gain feedback, at a price, from invited mainland guests.

ALSO NEW to the festival this year are a couple of showcases focusing on Persian and European cinema. This will be the first time that HIFF will actually focus a part of their event on this type of cinema.

Perhaps the most anticipated even – outside of the actual movies, is the return of Roger Ebert – who along with his wife Chaz, will be making his long-anticipated return to the festival, where he’ll be busy accepting the Vision in Film award. He will also present the screening of his personal pick, the feature “Leaves of Grass,” starring Edward Norton as twin brothers. To top it all off, he will take some time to sign copies of his latest book, a cookbook titled “The Pot and How to Use It: The Mystery and Romance of the Rice Cooker.”

The Hawaii International Film Festival is going to celebrate its 30th year in style. Make sure you are there for all of the groundbreaking activities that HIFF has in store for this year’s festival.
