For the first time ever, the thrid stop for the women in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing was held at Pipeline in the Vans Duel for the Jewel. For those of you who watched the webcast you could tell as they panned to the women while the men’s Pipe Masters 5th Round was finished up that the women were excited and nervious.
Even Keala Kennelly who was with Mark Occhilupo up in the booth doing the announcing was excited for the sport of women’s surfing. (And a little jealous) The women were out at pipe all alone for the last stop of the triple crown of surfing and it was great to watch.
In the end the Duel for the Jewel was dominated by 4-time ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS). Although all surfers were able to tuck in and get some backdoor action at Pipeline, Gilmore was able to come out on top over fellow Aussie Tyler Wright as well as the two Hawaiians Coco Ho and Alana Blanchard.
Check out these awesome photos from the event. The girls ripped!
Stephanie Gilmore also walked away with the Vans Triple Crown title she had this to say in the end which summed it up well.
“It’s such a Hollywood kind of a dream,” said Gilmore. “We had such a long wait in between the Sunset event and this heat so it’s kind of like the nerves were building and building… My first wave I hit the bottom – almost all my waves except for the one I made I hit the bottom, but it was a cool little memento from Backdoor.”
Vans Duel for the Jewel Final Results:
1 – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) 14.50
2 – Tyler Wright (AUS) 7.50
3 – Coco Ho (HAW) 6.86
