The Sunset Sponsor Me Open was a go on Tuesday in 5-7 foot Hawaiian style surf. Overcast skys and brown water didn’t draw too many beach watchers, but the action still went down in the water.
Pancho Sullivan posted the highest heat score of the day with a combination of a solid barrel ride and heavy carves for a score of 17.10. Hank Gaskell pulled into a filthy pit in his round two heat and managed to get spit out with one of the highest wave scores of the day, a 9.35.
The contest is set to resume Wednesday morning at 8:00am with Billy Kemper going out in the first heat hot off his HIC Sunset win in 2010. Look for Sunny Garcia’s trade mark power surfing to go down in heat #2.
The swell is forecast to pick up in the afternoon on Wednesday just in time for the final rounds. For the latest results and live webcast check out www.sponsorme.com.
