I’ve hit the jackpot on udon noodles at Marukame Udon on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki. This place is no joke, and there’s usually a line outside the restaurant to prove it.  Waiting in line for about 15 minutes was well worth it for me, and I got to get some in house made Japanese style udon noodles for a ridiculously inexpensive price.

This brand new restaurant just opened about 6 months ago and is packed almost everyday during peak hours.  Marukame Udon is a Japan udon chain with about 467 locations across Japan.  This Kuhio Avenue location is the first in Hawaii, and locals and tourist alike seemed to be thrilled.

Marukame Udon makes all their noodles fresh, in house, and basically right in front of you while you wait in line, which makes for chewy, al dente, delicious Japanese style udon noodles.  The menu is very simple, udon noodles several different ways: hot or cold, with or with out soup, or curry.  You can select your type of udon and if you choose a musubi or tempura to go alongside.

Your order is prepared immediately, then you pay, add your condiments, and take your food tray to your table.  Simple, and simply inexpensive! One order of noodles will run you from $3.75 to $5.75!  Sides like musubis and tempura will run you $1.25 to $1.50 each.

I am delighted to find a inexpensive and authentic udon noodle house! I also love cold udon, which can sometimes be hard to find, and Marukame does a mean Zaru Udon for only $3.75!  Udon competitors beware! You may have to step it up on your quality and lower your prices to keep up with Marukame.
