Best Places on Oahu to Get Puppies

Finding a puppy on Oahu can sometimes be a challenge.  Depending on the kind of dog you are looking for, sometimes a certain breed can be in high demand and getting a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder or shop can be a long search.  If you’re looking for a new furry addition to you family and want a puppy here are a couple of the best places to check out.

The Hawaiian Humane Society

Despite what you may think, the Hawaiian Humane Society does get unwanted puppies into the shelter fairly often.  Either from an unexpected dog owner or from puppy mill situations there are often opportunities to get healthy puppies from the HHS.  Adoption fees are low and affordable.  To get more information on adoption, visit the shelter, their website, or give them a call.

The Oahu SPCA

The Oahu SPCA is my favorite no kill animal shelter on the island, and I volunteer there when I can.  When volunteering at the shelter, I’ve seen numerous litters of puppies there that need homes.  Adoption fees here are also low and affordable.  For more information on puppy availability, visit their website or give them a call.

Petland Kahala’s Sunday Puppy Swap Meet

Every Sunday Petland Kahala has a puppy sale by local breeders from 12-5 pm.  Local breeders will bring in their puppies of all types and you meet and interact with them, and even purchase them on the spot directly from the breeders.  Every week the types of dogs vary and so do the prices from a few hundred dollars to thousands for pedigree puppies.

A Reputable Pet Store

The Pet Corner at Ward Warehouse, The Pet Depot in Ewa Beach, and Koolau Pets in Windward Mall all sell puppies from local breeders.  Pet store prices are usually the highest you will pay on the island and expect to pay in the thousands for pedigree puppies.  When visiting a pet store, make sure you look out for puppy mill breeders by doing your research on each and every pet store you visit, ask tons of questions, and have your pets checked out by your veterinarian.

Craigslist

Don’t forget to check Craigslist when looking for a puppy.  There are tons and tons of dogs that need homes due to people moving or not being able to care for their dogs.  Beware of Internet scams and people who have mistreated their dogs, but you may be able to get a puppy out of an unfortunate situation and into your loving home.  Advertisers usually charge a small re-homing fee and can vary, but are usually affordable.
