I don’t know, but I think might be the only one on the island who has only recently been to Kaimuki Grill. Kaimuki Grill is a small, casual eatery in the heart of Kaimuki located on 12th Avenue that has some of the best garlic chicken I have ever had! I’ve heard this place has been around for a while and everyone and their dog goes here, but I guess not me. I finally got to try it out for lunch one day, and I have got to say, this tiny mom and pop operation really impressed me.
The inside of the restaurant is not impressive and almost reminded me of an old school plate lunch take out spot and a karaoke bar in one. Also, the place is super small! I bet at peak hours this place can get full really fast. But don’t let the odd look fool you! The service here is friendly and fast and the food, mouth watering…
The food portions here are huge and the prices are very reasonable like $9 for a plate of the crispiest most delicious Garlic Chicken you will ever eat! I really think this beats out all the others around!! It’s $7 for a huge basket of the Furikake Lotus Root Chips, which yet at first seem very unusual, but are quite good.
The Tyler’s Kalua Bowl ($9) was another surprisingly good dish. It was served with lomi lomi salmon, pork was tender and not greasy, and rice was well cooked not mushy. The Shoyu Style Dogs ($5) reminded me of a local style backyard BBQ and were very tasty. The Fried Saimin ($6.75) was the only thing that was a so-so for me. It was simply package noodles with some bean sprouts, not bad, but nothing special.
My girlfriend Chany is a dessert freak and insisted that we get a slice pie at lunch. I was hesitant after the huge lunch, but after having a bite of the Watermelon Pie, I was shocked by this amazing dessert!! The pie looks like a watermelon, but is actually different flavors of layers of ice cream with an Oreo crust. The dessert is fresh and cool tasting and really one of the best desserts I’ve had in a while.
I can’t wait to go back again to Kaimuki Grill and try their other unique dishes like the Mac and Cheese Wedges, Our Famous Kalua Pig Nachos, Pesto Salmon, and of course more Garlic Chicken! If you haven’t been to Kaimuki Grill, this place is a must try. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
