Being the hugest fan of shave ice, especially at Shimazu’s, I was told of another shave ice place that may have it beat is near Ala Moana Shopping Center. I quickly found out that it was Ailana Shave Ice, located on Kona Street, and went quickly to investigate.
I went with a bunch of friends and had a variety of different flavors. First off, let me say that the shave ice was nice and soft. Not nearly as dense as Shimazu’s, but still very soft and not crunchy and coarse like some other shave ice places. What set this place apart is their variety of flavor options.
I heard that the strawberry milk was to die for, so I immediately did a half strawberry milk and half haupia (coconut flavored). The strawberry milk was seriously outstanding! There were actual pieces of strawberry seeds in the syrup and the cream flavor from the milk almost made the syrup and ice taste like strawberry milk shake! The haupia was also good, but it just couldn’t stand up to the taste of the strawberry milk. For only $3.75, you get a decent amount of shave ice, and the quality homemade flavors as well.
Since we went with a group of people, we were fortunate to try a variety of flavors, such as the Tropical Trio ($4.75), Dreamsicle with mochi, and Uji Kintoki ($4.75). The tropical trio was shave ice with papaya, mango, haupia, condensed milk and ice cream. The dreamsicle actually tasted like the orange and vanilla everyone has grown to like, but was definitely on the sweeter side. The side of mochi was also very good, due to its soft and chewy texture.
The Uji Kintoki is one of their specialties and can be seen at mostly Asian restaurants. This shave ice was drowned with green tea syrup and topped with azuki beans, mochi, and also came with ice cream. Here, they actually gave the right amount of azuki beans, whereas other places like Palama Supermarket just gives too much azuki which makes the shave ice taste like a bowl of beans. Combined with the mochi and green tea, I would definitely recommend this one!
I would not hesitate to recommend Ailana Shave Ice to anyone who is looking to treat themselves to great shave ice! Great prices, nice and courteous workers, as well as great tasting shave ice make this one great place to visit!!
