I love shabu shabu.  Not only is it healthy for you, but the variety of meats, vegetable, and seafood keeps my tastebuds on its toes!  So luckily on a rainy day, we started craving a nice place to eat shabu shabu.  Realizing that a new shabu shabu had opened up on King St., we headed to Shabu Shabu King to give it a shot.

If you remember TCBY next to Sushi King, the frozen yogurt store is no more, and has transformed to Shabu Shabu King.  Small, quaint, and clean, we were expecting a whole lot.  Unfortunately, it did not live up to our standards.

We ordered the mushroom soup stock, and I also ordered beef tongue and pork, as well as rice.  We also grabbed a bunch of vegetables and fish cake from the cooler.  Like other shabu shabu restaurants, the sides are on colored plates that determine the price of each dish (think Genki Sushi).  They did give us a side of edamame for free which was a nice touch.  We went over to their selection of sauces, and I took a couple.  None of them really stood out, and I ended up using their sesame sauce the most, though that too was only average.

When everything finally arrived, we noticed that we did not receive our rice.  Asking the waitress again, she said sorry and began to seat other customers.  The placed wasn’t really filled yet, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought that she’d bring the rice after.  Waiting about 10 more minutes, we noticed that she was standing by the kitchen door just looking outside.  Again, I had to ask for the rice that we ordered, and it was then that she apologized and said that she forgot…twice.

To make matters worse, the beef tongue was absolutely the least tender tongue I’ve ever had.  It was very chewy and took definitely took some time to chew before I could swallow it.  In fact, I had contemplated spitting it out after vigorously going at it for quite some time that my jaw started getting sore.  Thankfully, the pork was tender and definitely saved the meal.  The vegetables and fish cake was also decent, and went well with the soup stock.  Free ice cream also comes with the meal, which is also another plus.

If you want good shabu shabu, head to Sweet Home Cafe, where the service and food are absolutely outstanding!  Shabu Shabu King was average at best.  It wasn’t too bad, but there are defintely better places out there to get some shabu shabu.
