Plate lunch connoisseurs, “Ah You ready to grind?” I have found the ultimate plate lunch spot on the island all the way out in Kahuku at Tita’s Grill and Catering.
This casual food walk up is located across from Kahuku High School and next to Kahuku Superette. Retired professional football player Junior Ah You is the owner of this breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot. This place serves up some of the best sandwiches, plate lunches, and fresh baked bread I have ever had. The thing about this place is the prices are super affordable, and the portions are ridiculous!
I first stumbled upon this place after a early morning surf and was looking for something for breakfast. I had driven by Tita’s many times before and decided to stop to see if they served breakfast.
I ordered their Breakfast Sandwich ($4), and received a HUGE delicious egg and bacon sandwich served on warm Polynesian bread. The sandwich was so big it took me all morning to eat it. This sandwich was really one of the best breakfast sandwiches I had ever had (beats Ted’s Bakery).
Steve and I decided to go back a couple more times after that and each time we were pleasantly surprised and a little overwhelmed by the fantastic food and ENORMOUS portions. I can’t emphasis the huge portions enough because Steve’s Grill Pastrami Sandwich ($6.75) took up the entire take out container, and it still came with fries on the side.
My Loco Moco ($8.50) was also to die for and came with TWO huge full hamburger patties, two eggs, more rice than one could know what to do with, yummy tuna macaroni salad, all slathered in brown gravy. This dish was a challenging amount of food that I happily enjoyed for lunch that day, an afternoon snack, and also for breakfast the next day!
Tita’s specializes in their homemade Polynesian bread that comes used in their sandwiches or you can buy it by the “loaf” for $5, which is enough bread to feed a small family or for a $1 for one huge slice. This bread is a must try if you come here.
Another thing about Tita’s that I really really love is the friendly, welcoming, and warm service. This is truly an island style eatery and everyone here is especially nice. Prices and portions reflect their generosity. One day that I was there for lunch, Junior Ah You himself was handing out free chocolate cake to all the customers! Free is really unheard of nowadays, and I was really floored to experience this type of customer service. And by the way, the cake was served warm, moist, and sooooo good!
If you’re ever in the Kahuku area or want to have an over the top local food experience you have to drive out to Tita’s Grill! Don’t forget to get some Polynesian bread to go!
