The festival of Obon (or “Bon”) is a celebration of ancestors and loved ones who have gone before us, celebrated by Japanese Buddhists. The festival occurs once a year, for a few days in July. This past Friday and Saturday July 6, 7, 2012, the Haleiwa Jodo Mission held their annual Bon Dance and I was there to capture the lighting of lanterns to commemorate lost loved ones.
Afterwards, I even joined in on the dancing; a parade around a tower which holds a boisterous band. The simple steps set to a count of six were easy enough for me to follow along with, and playful enough for those with more experience to turn up a notch. Check out the pictures below!
