Pidgin - What'd you say?

You might have thought the first language that we would put here would be Hawaiian since we are talking about Hawaii. To be quite honest with you the only place I have ever heard Hawaiian is someone singing it in a song, at a Luau, or breifly on that Kau Inoa TV commercial.

The real "Hawaiian" these days is something call Pidgin, pernounced just like the bird. The langauge is really a combination of English, Phillipino, Japanese, and some other interesting languages. My take on it is that it's a langauge formed to tell you the most with the least amount of words. For example. A lot of people in the United States while trying to tell a story say ah or um with a pause, and then continue on with the story. Locals in Hawaii say Dakine, expect that you know what they're talking about and then go on with the story. Although at times it can be a little frustrating it's kind of interesting to listen to two locals talk together. How the heck do they know what Dakine is for that sentence.

I am going to try and give you as many of these words as I can with some examples and some definitions. Really you have to listen to what people are saying. I would suggest TV commericials, yes they use this on the TV, news reports, and radio stations. Or just head down to your nearest L and L, order some delicious food, sit down, and listen.

Auntie - Any female that you are somewhat close to and is older in age than you. We're talking anyone.

Dakine - Really this is anything, anything you can't think of, anything you were just talking about, anything you want to talk about, anything
