<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/vac.jpg"></a><a rel="attachment wp-att-4856" href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/2010/03/14/niaulani-forest-work-day-and-nature-walk/vac/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-4856" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 5px;" title="vac" src="http://www.alohaupdate.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/vac.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="113" /></a> The Big Island of Hawai’i is a treasure trove of discovery &amp; wonder and one of the gateways to all that The Big Island has to offer is The Volcano Art Center.  Located in Kilauea, home of the fiery Goddess of the Volcano, Pele, the VAC hosts a variety of fun challenging activities throughout the year.</p>
<p>The VAC is calling for volunteers to take part in ‘Niaulani Forest Work Day’ Sunday, March 21, 2010, a perfect way to celebrate the arrival of Spring 2010, from 9AM to 12Noon, a day for families &amp; friends to get together to learn about the flora &amp; fauna on the 7.4 acres of the Niaulani Forest.  A day to connect with nature while assisting with needed tasks,</p>
<p>Monday, March 22, 2010 from 9:30 AM return to Niaulani Forest for a hike along the gentle 1/7 mile loop trail, while expert guides explain the biological, ecological, and geographical features of the area, as well as the cultural usages of flora &amp; fauna by the Hawai’i’ans, the plants that were used for ornamentation as well as medicine, plants sacred to the art of hula.</p>
<p>The Niaulani Nature Walk is an on going event free though calabash (donations) are welcome. “The weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai&#8217;i Volcanoes National Park. Meet at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (19-4074 Old Volcano Rd.) Call (808) 967-8222.”</p>
<p>As an added incentive Sunday March 21th thru Tuesday March 23 gather on the porch of the Volcano Arts Center Gallery porch and witness visiting artist Jessica Landau gives a free demonstration of the art of sculpting molten glass.  For further info about the VAC  and its many activities check out <a href="http://www.volcanoartcenter.org">Volcano Art Center</a> .</p>

<description><![CDATA[[ March 13, 2010; 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. ] Dog Th Bounty Hunter will be at the Kahala Mall this Saturday for the release of his new book.]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/tag/dog-the-bounty-hunter/">Dog The Bounty Hunter</a> is kicking off the release of his newest book this weekend at the Barnes and Nobel at Kahala Mall on the south shore of Oahu. Dog will be there from 2 pm signing books and doing short interviews.</p>
<p>This is Dogs second book which officially comes out Tuesday. We&#8217;ll have more information then but the following is the official press release for the event that we wanted to get out as soon as it came in.</p>
<p>Duane “Dog” Chapman, star of A&#038;E’s highest rated series, Dog the Bounty Hunter, will kick off his second book tour in Honolulu this Saturday, as follows:</p>
<p>WHO:        DUANE “DOG” CHAPMAN<br />
WHAT:      SIGNING &#038; KICK-OFF FOR HIS NEW BOOK, “WHERE MERCY IS SHOWN, MERCY IS GIVEN”<br />
WHEN:     SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2010 • 2:00 P.M.<br />
WHERE:  BARNES &#038; BOBLE BOOKSELLERS, KAHALA MALL<br />
HOW:       DOG WILL PERSONALLY SIGN COPIES OF HIS NEW BOOK, ONLY (NO OTHER MERCHANDISE WILL BE SIGNED).</p>
<p>This is the second book by Chapman.  His first in 2008, “You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide,” quickly went to #1 on the New York Times Best-seller list, and expectations are high for “Where Mercy Is Shown, Mercy is Given,” which starts off where the first book left off.</p>
<p>The official shelf date for the book is March 16th, but 2,000 pre-release copies have been provided for the Kahala event, exclusively.</p>
<p>Chapman asked to kick-off and end both book tours in Hawaii, his home, so he kicks off at Barnes &#038; Noble Kahala on March 13th, and ends the tour – after a 13-city stop – at Border’s Waikele. </p>
<p>Chapman has been busy this past week filming with a French TV crew, and a crew from E! Hollywood True Story.  He has also been busy filming for the 7th season of “Dog the Bounty Hunter.”</p>
<p>Dog the Bounty Hunter airs Wednesday nights in the U.S., and also airs around the world.  For more information, visit www.dogthebountyhunter.com or www.aetv.com/dog-the-bounty-hunter/</p>

<p>The bounty hunter who has been made famous chasing down those that skip court dates and put his bail in jeopardy (and sometimes others bail), and doing this all in Hawaii none-the-less, has a new set of cameras following him. E! True Hollywood Story and their cameras have been following Dog and his family around Hawaii for the past week and will finish up taping for a show to air this May on E!.</p>
<p>Dog&#8217;s show continues to do well with his niche audience and continues to bring he and his family fame and fortune as they run their bail bonds shop from downtown Honolulu and live out in Portlock on the south east side of Oahu.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll let you know the exact date the show is going to air, so check back in our Dog section.</p>
<p>Also, check out <a href="http://www.dogthebountyhunter.com/">Dog the Bounty Hunter&#8217;s Site</a>.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The National Football League&#8217;s version of the all-star game, the <a href="<a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/tag/pro-bowl/">Pro Bowl</a> returns to Hawaii in 2011 after taking a year off to test out a new NFL idea. The game will be played January 30th 2011, the week before the Super Bowl</p>
<p>As many of you may have realized this year, the NFL decided to play the Pro Bowl the week between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. The thought being that they would extend the excitmen of the Super Bowl for the participating city. </p>
<p>Well, although the viewership for the Pro Bowl had more TV viewers than ever before, the sentiment from the players was clear, they missed Hawaii.</p>
<p>Although it&#8217;s not clear whether it will stay, we&#8217;re glad, alon with coutless businesses that it&#8217;s back in Hawaii. Even if the Super Bowl players again won&#8217;t be making the trip.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-4868" href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/2010/03/01/neil-abercrombie-resigns-as-hawaii-us-representative/neil-abercrombie-hawaii/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-4868" style="border: 0pt none; margin: 5px;" title="Neil Abercrombie Hawaii" src="http://www.alohaupdate.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Neil-Abercrombie-Hawaii.jpg" alt="" width="130" height="159" /></a> US House of Representative <a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/tag/neil-abercrombie/">Neil Abercrombie</a> has officially resigned from his post leaving the seat vacant and Hawaii, one less represented in congress.  <a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/2010/01/04/neil-abercrombie-to-resign-in-february/">As we reported ealier</a> the resignation took place on the last day of February, the 28th, 2010.</p>
<p>What will Abercrombie do from here out? Well, he wasn&#8217;t resigning to sip Mai Tai&#8217;s in Kahala. Nope, instead, he&#8217;s about to enter what we think will be a very heated battle for the Democratic nomination against <a href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/tag/mufi-hannemann/">Mufi Hannemann</a> to run for Governor of Hawaii. Linda Lingle will be done after this year, and the spot will be open for newcomers.</p>
<p>Although there was debate on how the state of Hawaii will fill the vacant seat it has now been decided that in May there will be a special election held. The debate was whether or not funds, around a million dollars, would be available to hold either a walk up or mail in ballot vote for the seat. We still don&#8217;t have word on which one it will be but we do know the election will be May 22nd.</p>

<description><![CDATA[The tsunami warning for all of the Hawaiian islands was lifted a little after 1:30 pm this afternoon opening the coastal highways and streets it once closed.]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We&#8217;re finally back at home base after spending most of the day on the Pali highway hiking, people watching, and listening to the radio reports from various stations. Didn&#8217;t have a TV, but it sounded like the Hilo Bay cam that everyone was speaking of was pretty boring. And I&#8217;m not complaining about boring.</p>
<p>As of 1:30 pm ish, the Tsunami Warning for Hawaii was lifted and the coastal roads that were once closed were reopened. Beaches were reopened, stores began to see life and traffic definitely felt like a saturday as we headed back home.</p>
<p>All in all we thought the state of Hawaii did pretty darn good. Yeah it was boring, yeah their predictions turned out to be wrong, but what if they had been right, and no one was evacuated? I just hope that next time this happens (well actually I don&#8217;t hope it happens again) but if it does, I hope everyone takes the same precautions and heads for the hills.</p>
<p>I for one will be packing the pop-up tent, hibachi, and a deck of cards. The hike was nice though. For more info, pictures and more, check out <A href="http://www.alohaupdate.com/tag/tsunami/">our Hawaii Tsunami section</a>. More photos to come.</p>
