Last Day for Cheap Hawaii Flights on Hawaiian Airlines

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Yep, these prices are better than the $149 One-Way Hawaii flights on Alaskan which were pretty cheap flights to Hawaii, and this is your last day to get the great deals. Hawaiian Airlines has the offer and the cheapest we’ve seen is $144 one-way into Portland, while multiple cities had tickets in the $194 range.

Most of the cheap tickets needed to fly during the month of September, although Novmeber still has some cheap days available. The range was from $288 (Portland to All islands) while the most expensive in the “best deal” was $558 (Las Vegas to Honolulu). If you’re coming from Portland, you can get a pretty darn good deal.

Las Vegas to Maui cheapest flight was $308 round trip.
Seattle to All Islands cheapest flight was $308 round trip.
Portland to All Islands cheapest flight was $288 round trip.
Los Angeles to All Islands cheapest flight was $338 round trip.
San Diego to All Islands cheapest flight was $388 round trip.

Hawaiian Airlines Offering Flights to Korea From Hawaii

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

KoreaStarting in January of 2011 Hawaiian Airlines will offer flights to Seoul’s Incheon International Airport. Hawaii’s largest airline since its establishment in 1929 will continue even further in their efforts to serve more and more destinations in the Pacific region.

While Hawaiian already specializes in bringing visitors to and from the islands from the mainland, it also serves travelers looking to travel to other South Pacific destinations. While already offering flights to Tahiti, American Samoa, and Sydney, Australia, the Seoul route will help to further expand its international flight service. It also offers a strategic route to the many travelers going to and from Southeast Asia’ Philippine’s Islands.

This new route is also a great step toward opening up more planned service to other South Pacific destinations.

Hawaiian will not use the new incoming Airbus’s on the route at first, but will integrate them in as time goes by. Instead it will employ the 264-seater Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Hawaiian plans on running the flight 4-times per week, which will add more than 54,000 new air seats annually between Honolulu and Seoul.

Incheon International Airport is a major hub for international travel and is acknowledged as one of the largest air traffic hubs in Asia. It is also recognized by the Airports Council International as the Best Airport Worldwide for five consecutive years.

Hawaii Companies Not Immune to Stock Market Sell-Off

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Not really a crash but rather a rapid sell-off of sorts that sent the stock market tumbling Thursday amid a BP caused oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and a debt crisis in Greece that is causing the Euro to slide.  Companies based here in the islands are not immune to the sell-off and followed the trend of the NYSE and NASDAQ as a whole.

Alexander & Baldwin (ALEX) dropped nearly 6% by the end of the two day sell-off that might not be over when the stock market returns to action tomorrow.

Bank of Hawaii (BOH) only dropped 3% in the two days but saw nearly a 2% drop in the hour of 2 pm to 3pm where some NYSE stocks saw their price cut to a penny. BOH quickly rebounded but didn’t slow it’s downtrend as the sell-off continued.

Hawaiian Air (HA) actually rose at the end of Friday as news of new Tokyo routes boosted the shares of Hawaiian stock by nearly 3 % in the last hour of the day.

We’ll keep you posted this week as to the turmoil that the exchanges are seeing and let you know how some other local companies are fairing.

go! and Mokulele Merger means higher prices

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

As if the airline industry in Hawaii could get any more complicated.  With the closing of Aloha Airlines last year, the continued price wars between those remaining, and the economy weakening day after day, the inter-island travel industry just got another jolt.

go! Airlines and Mokulele are merging under Mesa Air Group to form go! Mokulele. This undoubtedly means higher prices for flights between the Hawaiian islands. Yuk! This comes at a time when Maui, Kauai, and The Big Island have all seen huge economic losses, and could mean further losses from those kama’aina that like to travel inter-island on a weekend getaway.

The new airline, only has to compete with Hawaiian Airlines, whose known for having higher priced tickets with it’s larger airplanes and higher carrying capacity. Only time will tell whether or note the price of your flight to Maui will increase, but we think it most likely has to.

For those of you with tickets on either go! or Mokulele, your tickets will still be valid and you can continue to book with either company, which will eventually become one seemless company as the merger continues.

Who will be the next airline to try and take a stab at inter-island travel?

New Direct Flights From Honolulu to Apia, Western Samoa

Samoa-Islands-Map

First, here is a brief geography lesson on Samoa.  There are three main islands that make up the Samoan island chain.  The largest island of Tutuila is the main island that makes up the territory of American Samoa.  The other two islands on the left are Savii and Upolu that make up the country of Western Samoa.  Because of the proximity of Samoa to Hawaii (approximately 5 hours away by plane) Hawaii shares many cultural similarities with Hawaii and makes Samoa a popular destination for Hawaii residents.  Hawaii residents may travel to Samoa to visit their families or simply for a vacation.

On my recent trip to Western Samoa I traveled on a full flight on Hawaiian Airlines over to American Samoa landing in the city Pago Pago.  I then took a small prop plane to over to Western Samoa to the city of Apia.  There are currently no flights directly to and from Honolulu to Western Samoa.  Hawaiian Airlines is the only airline that currently flies to and from Samoa from Honolulu.   There are only two flights a week on Sundays and Thursdays, so the flights tend to be packed with people.

Air Pacific, Fiji’s international airline will be offering direct flights from Honolulu to Apia starting September 11, 2009.  The flight will operate on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with direct flights once a week on Fridays.  This will help Samoans have a more convenient access to Honolulu and the mainland United States.  Residents or visitors to Western Samoa coming from Honolulu will no longer have to take the small prop plane to and from Pago Pago.  For more flight information visit www.airpacific.com.

Go! Airlines Slowly Raises Ticket Prices

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Interisland flights aren’t immune to the global increase in flight prices. While mainland flights have gone up considerably since the first of the year, so to have interisland flights making it difficult for some people to work or even see family members.

Shortly after Aloha Airlines closed it’s doors both Hawaiian and go! raised their prices and left many people angry. A ticket on go! quickly went from $39 to $49 and didn’t show signs of slowing down. Then go! airlines lost a suit which made them own Hawaiian $52 billion and ticket prices went even higher, for both companies.

Now, as I write this, ticket prices on go! airlines, the discount interisland airline, sits at $61 one way for select flights. Most flights are even more than that, especially if you want to travel on peak times. Tickets prices for round trip have been seen for well over $150.

However, with gas prices falling in Hawaii and worldwide due to decreased demand, we may see interisland air fares come down with them. I’ve already noticed a decrease in ticket prices to the mainland with west cost tickets peaking at $1000 already retreat to half the price. Hopefully tickets between the islands will do the same.

Hawaiian Airlines Increases Interisland Fares

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Hawaiian Airlines announced that it would be increasing the base fare price on it’s interisland flights from $49 to $54. This is for one-way tickets.

This news of fare increases is coming on the heels of news that Mesa Airlines, the parent company of the low fare competitor of interisland flights go! airlines, will pay Hawaiian Airlines $52.5 million. This was from the settlement last year that claimed that Mesa used confidential information to enter the market of interisland travel when it was thinking about helping Hawaiian out a few years back.

These prices are for off-peak flights and don’t include increase to peak flights, which I think everyone can agree have slowly been going up. It will be interesting to see how go! reacts to the news and if they can survive after having to pay Hawaiian. The fact that Aloha Airlines is closed may help the two airlines stay in business but Mesa is having it’s own troubles losing contracts with companies like Delta on mainland based flights.

Only time will tell if we’re to continue to see price increases and eventually have to pay more than we should on interisland flights. Maybe these companies should hang out with the CEO of southwest and see how they offer such cheap flights. (Although $54 one way isn’t too bad either.)
