Jack Johnson to Release Another Album

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

For those of you excited (you may need to be from Hawaii) that Jack Johnson’s Kokua Festival is returning after a year hiatus, you’ll be even more excited that Jack and the crew are back at the Mango Tree (studio) creating another album.

Those of you enrolled in Jack Johnson’s emailing list, you just got the word that Jack, Merlo, Adam and Zach are back in the studio recording an album. There’s no word on the release date of the album or no jam session leaks yet but you can rest assured that we’ll be the first to let you know.

Great stuff from the North Shore of Oahu! Let’s hope he releases the album or at least a few songs, right around the time of the Festival.

Kokua Festival to Return in 2010

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

The Kokua Festival with return in 2010. After a two day two show concert in 2008 which saw the likes of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds perform along side Jack Johnson, Jack and company went on a break. There was no concert in 2009 due to Jack touring and subsequently releasing his CD/DVD combo En Concert.

Well, the much anticipated Kokua Festival will be back on Oahu in 2010. April 23rd and 24th, the festival which benefits Jack Johnson’s Kokua Hawaii Foundation among various other environmental charities, will be back.

Although the concert lineup hasn’t been released yet, they’ll have quite a challenge beating what they’ve done in the past. We’ll let you know when they release the lineup and when tickets go on sale and where you can get them. Check back in our Kokua Festival section.

Furlough Fridays Start Today

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

You may have noticed the low volume of traffic today on the roads. For some running late it was a welcome relief. For others, namely those off the roads, it means less money, and in these economic times not good at all. But there is something more important going on.

Its the first of 17 furlough fridays for Hawaii state teachers, and more importantly our students started today. More than 13,000 teachers aren’t working today, and more than 170,000 public school students are without educational instruction as well.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of people are expected to head to the state capital today in Honolulu from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to protest the furlough days. Even Jack Johnson will be there to help with the cause and try and change the policy that has caused our students to have even less education during the course of this year. He was asked to speak publicly at the event being that he’s a strong proponent of youth education but instead he has chosen to play a few songs for the crowd that gathers.

Hopefully this can get resolved and they can at least have the furlough days on non-instructional days.

Jack Johnson to Play Hawaii Theatre in November

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Kokua Festival Banner at the Waikiki Shell

Jack Johnson is all set to play the Hawaii Theatre on November 13th and 14th this year. The North Shore son will play the Theatre to promote his new CD and DVD “En Concert.”

En Concert follows Jack Johnson on the European leg of his Sleep through the Static concert tour. Proceeds from the concert, sales of the CD and sales of the DVD will go to benefit Kokua Hawaii Foundation as well as the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundatio.

Johnson usually plays at the Waikiki Shell in early spring for the Kokua Festival. This year, due to his touring duties and what sounded like the need for a year off, residents of Oahu did not have the festival.

Kokua Hawaii Foundation members (with active memberships as of midnight Friday) will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets from 10 a.m. to noon. Members must have a copy of their membership ID along with a valid photo ID (drivers license).

Get there early, cause tickets are gonna go quick!

Kokua Festival 2008 Recap

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

This years Kokua Festival, put on by Jack Johnson, was hyped to be the best yet. With local group Go Jimmy Go, Hawaii born Mason Jennings, Local Girl Paula Fuga, Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds, and of course Jack Johson how could it not be good.

But in the 4 years that I’ve gone (missed one) this was the best one yet, both days. Yeah I was lucky enough to score tickets to both days of Kokua this year. Aside from the $7.75 beers, it was a winner. I’ve been waiting for a while to see Dave Matthews perform in Hawaii and to see him with Tim Reynolds was even better.

Each night was different, the first night Dave was a little more comical, and Jack played longer. Even Matt Costa, who was in town earlier in the week for a concert at Next Door in Honolulu, played a song with Jack. The second night Matt wasn’t there but Dave played some great songs, Bartender, Crash, and The Maker. Each night finished up with a Dave, Tim and Jack Jam session, some solor Jack songs, and of course, the 3 R’s with the whole group. That’s right, Dave Matthews was up on stage singing Reduce, Reuse, Recycle while Timmy Reynolds jammed. It was crazy!

The Eco Village was larger this year than previous years, either that or there was just more free stuff, and there was water stations this year for refilling water bottles (can’t remember, but I don’t think they had that last year.) In fact, this was the only place I’ve ever seen the line for water be longer than the line for beer!

All in all it was a great concert. I’m sure I’ll remember more, like if you road your bike to the concert you got free valet service and a separate line to go in.
