“Things to Know About Jazz” At The Kealakekua Public Library

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Jazz Artist Olga Salvatore and Guitarist/Bassist Greg Shirley present a wonderful mix of Jazz performance, Poetry & Chat about the history of Jazz courtesy of F.O.L.K (Friends of the Libraries of Kona http://www.folkhawaii.com/) at the Kealakekua Public Library from 11AM to 12 Noon on Saturday July 31st 2010.

Hawai’i is fortunate that Olga Salvatore decided to relocate from California to the Big Island a little over eight years ago, bringing her stirring vocal talents to the local Jazz scene as well as the Latin Music scene through her band Manzanero (www.manzaneroinhawaii.com), which performs primarily Latin dance music such as salsa, cumbia, cha cha cha, bolero, rumba, mariachi and more.  As a Jazz artist Olga Salvatore frequently duets with Greg Shirley, though with notice she can conjure up a seven piece band, together they dazzle Big Island audiences at events big & small.  Check out Olga Salvatore via http://www.olgasalvatore.com/.

“Things To Know About Jazz” is free and the public is strongly encouraged to attend, what can be better than an afternoon of Jazz at the delightful Kealakekua Public Library Saturday July 31st 2010.

Royal Hawai’i'an Band Schedule for July

Monday, July 5th, 2010

One of Hawai’i’s treasures The Royal Hawai’i’an Band and much of the traditional Hawai’i’an music that is enjoyed to this day owes a great debt of gratitude to a man who was born and raised in far away Pottsdam, Germany.  By request of King Kamehameha V, Heinirch Wilhelm Berger ventured to Hawai’i in 1872 to take charge of the Royal Hawai’i’an Band, after a brief return to Germany, Berger returned to Hawai’i and devoted the rest of his life to not only managing The Royal Hawai’i’an Band, but to preserving Hawai’i’an music, to compose music honoring Hawai’i, Henry Berger worked with King Kalakaua arranging the King’s composition that became the Kingdom and now the State anthem. Hawai’i Pono’i. Henry Berger became a Hawai’i’an citizen and friend to the royal family, encouraging their love of music, sharing their love of music, enchanted by Hawai’i’an music, which Henry felt was “hauntingly beautiful,” Berger was credited with preserving many songs, writing “down every single Hawaiian melody he heard, he arranged them for the Royal Hawaiian Band and published many of them.”

Due to the dedicated work of men such as Henry Berger, The Royal Hawai’i’an Band continues to thrive, kept alive by the love & dedication of generations, in return the Band blesses residents of Honolulu with numerous concerts throughout the year, here is there schedule for July 2010.

Art After Dark is Back in 2010 Tonight!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Art After Dark is back! After taking a few months off the monthly program put on at the Honolulu Academy of Arts is ready to go tonight February 26, 2010.

The theme tonight… Mad for Modern, and is claiming to have “all the modern art you can handle.” Oh we can handle it alright. And we’ll definitely be there for the kick-off event of the 2010 series. Which by the way is from 6 pm to 9 pm as usual.

Joseph Pa`ahana will be in the courtyard tonight remixing images from the “the time art went commercial.” Kind of excited to see if there are any neat ads from the 50′s 60′s and 70′s in his mix. Those kine ads were da bomb.

Also available will be free portraits of both the photographic and sketches kind. Serving food for the evening with be Kaimuki’s Town, and DJ Nicky Savage will be spinning or electronically mixing music your listening enjoyment before Clones of the Queen get on stage for a live performance.
